Hour of Code 2017

Computer Science Education Week
December 4-10, 2017

An inspiring message from New Mexico Senator Heinrich:

We believe every student in New Mexico
should have the opportunity to learn computer science!

That is why New Mexico TechWorks is teaming with the Computer Science Teachers Association of New Mexico, the New Mexico Tech Council, Santa Fe City Schools, LANL, and LANL Foundation plus civic leaders, organizations, businesses and schools throughout New Mexico to promote learning events and Hour of Code activities statewide.

We encourage EVERY school and community in our state
to kickstart this vision by hosting an "Hour of Code!"

Highlights

Santa Fe Public Schools
Over 22 schools participated, and reached just over 6000 students!
Leading schools included:
 Milagro 600 students
Pinon 550 students
Amy Biehl 530 students
Kearny 450 students
Sweeney 440 students
CHS  and SFHS - nearly 800 students participated

Los Alamos National Laboratory
Approximately 85 LANL volunteers helped facilitate the Hour of Code
at 30 area schools to about 2400 students.
Many LANL employees took advantage of Science Education Community Service Time to participate.  We estimate that about 2400 students experienced the Hour of Code in our area. That number is approximately 50% boys and 50% girls.

Air Force Research Laboratory
hosted a public community event with over 65 community members

Explora, Santa Fe Community Foundation, and Make Santa Fe
also hosted Hour of Code activities.

Press

Senator Martin Heinrich prepared a one minute video encouraging New Mexico students to learn computer programming and that was played before many of the Hour of Code sessions.

Kurt Steinhaus, superintendent of Los Alamos schools, and Terry Wallace, incoming LANL director, attended a sixth grade Hour of Code session at Mountain Elementary school.

Jennifer Case Nevarez and Dr. Veronica Garcia, Superintendent of Santa Fe Public Schools, did a radio segment on KSFR aired Dec 10, 2017.

Comments from volunteers:
"On a side note, earlier that morning I practiced with my son and his girlfriend (in their twenties), and they really enjoyed it.  Am hoping to guide, or goad, them into going beyond the hour."  Ed

"I was at TEQ all day Wednesday (six classes). I was in the computer lab, the classes came to me. As expected the 2nd graders needed a lot of help.  One of the most interesting things that occurred was the student's desire to try a wide variety of games.  They really challenged themselves, especially the girls.  I just let them go! Minecraft was by far the most popular with the boys. It was a blast!"  Starlyn

"The speed of their internet connection was very slow and most of the kids in each class were having trouble getting anything to load.  We ended up doing some off-line/class-participation programming...we had a student take the place of Moana/Elsa/BB-8 and the class took turns using HoC-like commands to move the student around the room.  We covered "repeat" loops, "do until" conditionals, and even made up some of our own functions (ballerina twirl, monkey dance).  That ate up time while we waited for the websites to load and then they partnered up and took turns so that there weren't so many browsers hitting their network.  The teachers really seemed to like the "live action" programming as a starting point; I guess adverse internet conditions can be a good thing :) One of the other teachers told me afterwards that she planned to use coding as a reward to students who get their other work done.  She seemed to think it will be a great incentive. As always, it was a great experience and incredibly inspiring to hang out around such enthusiasm. Thanks for helping organize it!" Aimee

"I would love to assist with the Hour of Code. If I could, I would love to help in my daughter's class." Leslie

Thank you for the opportunity to give back to my community!" Antonette

Comments from teachers/principals:

"Thank you so much for volunteering and sharing the Hour of Code with Mrs. Reyer's student. We all appreciate your time."  Joyce

"A short note to say "Thank you!!! The students enjoyed the Hour of Code class.   I am sure the students will continue to explore the other games of coding here at school and at home. Again, a big shout to our volunteers. They were great!" Marie,
