Rio Grande Summer Camp offers weekly camps that integrate enriched learning experiences with play, creative expression and adventure-based learning. Morning, afternoon, and full-day options are available. Campers attending the morning session will choose an enrichment class in which they will learn alongside our educators, who average more than 10 years experience. The afternoon sessions will take advantage of our lovely and safe five-acre campus and focus on adventure education, design-thinking, and trips to museums and other exciting locales near campus.

Every other Thursday evening from 6:15 PM to 7:45 PM at the Main Library, Mark Galassi offers Serious Computer Programming 90-minute mini-course for youth. These courses focus on scientific and other areas of computing.
Materials: The courses are based on the Serious Programming: Small Coursesbook which you can access at: http://markgalassi.bitbucket.io
Prerequisites: Students must have taken the 10-hour “Serious Programming” course. Students must have a computer running the GNU/Linux operating system, which will likely be the one we installed in the 10-hour Serious Programming course.

Filmmakers Ink - Filmmaking / Acting Intensive

This Filmmakers Ink program is for those with a passion for filmmaking/acting, and would like to learn how to consistently make good movies.   Professional filmmakers will help you create a movie from script writing through pre-production and filming. Everyone will develop scripts, use professional filmmaking equipment, learn performance techniques designed for Actors and Directors, and gain experience in each of the main crew positions, including Director, 1st AD (Assistant Director), DP (Director of Photography), Gaffer (lighting) and Sound, while making movies together.
(5 days: 30 hours)


Special FX Filmmaking

Learn filmmaking through Filmmakers Ink “learn by doing” instruction. You will collaborate to develop an idea for a film, then, write, produce, shoot and direct a 5-10 minute movie together with an experienced filmmaker using digital video and in-camera Special FX.  Screen a rough cut of your movie for family and friends at your Premiere on the final day of film camp. You are encouraged to bring your own video camera (only if you already own one), recording media (tape or drive), and tripod for practice instruction.
(5 days: 17.5 hours)

This two-week camp will be held Monday – Friday, 4 hours each day, for 30 HS young women who are NEW to YWiC summer intensives. Join us to explore computer science through fun builds and learning to code! Computing skills will get you the job of your dreams someday, so join us this summer and celebrate your innate abilities for understanding how to help your neighbors, solve community issues, and discover your talents for integrating technologies. This is not an introduction to computers camp, but a walk with programming, computational thinking, and new technologies. If you have previously participated in a YWiC summer intensive, we want you to explore your imagination and challenge yourself on a self-guided tour! You will have access to available materials, computers, building components, robotic kits, instructors, classrooms, labs, and faculty members. Our team will walk with you as you take the lead and turn your ideas into completed projects! This intensive is open to 30 HS young women who have previously participated in a YWiC summer program, and want to earn a weekly stipend as you create something new! Stipend requirements include completing a full build within the one-week session, and presenting a complete project during the Showcase held each Friday.

This camp is designed to put technology into students’ hands and give them experience solving real world problems. This experience will teach boys to think like entrepreneurs and develop skills needed for success in jobs of the future. Each student will utilize Android devices to build projects, design apps, and create innovative solutions to social issues. Applicants for the Verizon CS Summer Camp should identify as minority male students from middle schools with an average of over 70% free and reduced lunch. Campers attending from the Gadsden School District will be bused to NMSU. Camp will include lunch, materials and supplies, an opportunity to win technology prizes, plus swag.
